ver the last couple of years, we have progressed into the specialist field of working on disability projects, we have moved into this sector following the successful completion of a substantial project in a village near Taunton.

The project consisted of the demolition of a derelict former restaurant building with flats to the first floor followed by the construction of a very extensive 2 storey home, which was fully designed and built to meet the specific requirements of the disabled client, her family and the carers.

The relationships of the whole team are very much different from that of a normal construction project, there are so many more parties involved that all need to work together and efficiently to bring the project to a successful conclusion. We work closely with the client, the client’s family, architects, engineers, solicitors, case managers, occupational therapists, the designers and installers of the specialist equipment required such as the hoisting systems, lifts and specialist bath systems.

The dwelling was constructed to have complete level access to all areas of the ground floor and garden to provide total accessibility, large 1200mm pocket doors to all habital rooms on the ground floor, hoisting systems fitted within the therapy room, bedroom, extensive wet room area, lounge and spa room which has a 4.5m long swim up spa bath installed within it.

All of the best equipment and technologies have been installed within the house from Arjo bath systems, whole house ventilation system, carer call system, cctv monitoring systems to name a few.

The first floor was configured to provide excellent facilities for the carer team having their own lounge, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and office.

The project was a success and was very rewarding for the whole team involved as it has provided the best possible environment for the client, her family, the carers to live and spend time within and the project was completed on time and to budget.

From a company perspective, we are in a fairly unique position of having a bit more of an understanding of the needs and requirements of our disabled clients as a company director and another colleague both have children with disabilities and therefore are understanding and sympathetic of the client’s needs and requirements as they have very close hand experience.

Since completing the project, we have worked on further disability projects and are tendering for future schemes, we are very passionate about this field of work and as a company we are progressing to specialize in what has proven to be an interesting, varied and personally rewarding sector of the industry.
